When Show Legal Moves is enabled (as it is by default), then depressing the left mouse button over one of the pieces (of either side), highlights those squares to which the piece may legally move (actually, it shows a super-set of the legal moves, as such things as a protected Lion are not taken into consideration at this stage). The highlighting is coded according to the following criteria:
When the middle mouse button is depressed (or the right button with the Ctrl button simultaneously held down), then the highlighting shows all the pieces that bear influence on the square concerned. The highlighting colour is based on the same principles as for the left button, but whether the circle is filled or not, depends upon whose turn it is.That is, the circle is filled with solid colour if the piece belongs to the side which gets to move next.
Which pieces bear influence on a square is determined by the Influence menu. The default is that all pieces that bear influence are highlighted (irrespective of intervening pieces). Alternatively, you may select pieces of one colour only, in which case only the pieces of that colour which could legally move to the square are highlighted.
The highlighting disappears when the mouse button is released.
When the right mouse button is depressed (and the Ctrl button is not simultaneously held down), the identity of the piece and it's promotion (if any) are displayed.
Whether Show Legal Moves is selected or not, depression of the mouse over a square, sometimes causes a coloured square to be drawn about the square. The colour is determined thus:
When the left mouse button is depressed whilst simultaneously holding down the Ctrl button, then the Edit Square facility is invoked.
When Tournament Mode is enabled, all these rules change.
