Dear shogi friends,

Below, please find a report from Goteborg Open 2005 by Carl Johan=20
Nilsson, quickly translated into English by myself. Enjoy!

Goteborg Open was played November 19 to 20 at the Goteborg Chess=20
Center. The latest three years, the tournament has only attracted 12=20
participants, but this year 16 players fought for the 6 prizes.=20
Especially interesting was to follow Emil Hermansson, Ulf Dahlqvist,=20
and Robert Soderberg. Emil is a strong chess player (International=20
Master) and he has recently spent a lot of time on shogi, supported by=20
his "sensei" Ulf Dahlqvist. Emil told us that Ulf has "taugth him=20
everything that he knows about shogi". Ulf also plays a lot at www.
shogidojo.com and showed a high potential strength when he won against=20
the Swedish Champion Christer Hartman at the Swedish Team Shogi=20
Championship this summer. Robert returned recently from a three weeks=20
visit to Japan, where he practiced shogi a lot over the board against=20
Japanese players. Could that have improved his shogi shape?

The first round saw some usual sensations. At the first board, Ulf=20
Dahlqvist won a brilliant attacking game against me. Also Jonas=20
Ahlqvist lost to a very much lower rated player, and that was Mikael=20
Hansson. It could also be noted that Emil had big problems against=20
Daniel Wredenberg, but he succeeded to turn a lost position into a win.

In the second round, Emil played against his sensei, Ulf Dahlqvist.=20
Emil won after a tough battle. Jan Rabe, who has recently added a good=20
attacking game to his traditionally good defence, won against Terje=20
Christoffersen. Thereby, two of the three highest rated players had had=20
to note their first losses already during the first two rounds. This=20
seemingly opened the path for Richard Bjerke, who has been close to win=20
this tournament many times without success. As late as last year, he=20
had practically won the tournament, but he lost after forgetting to=20
promote his bishop in his final move of the final game. Richard=20
seemingly played stable shogi during his first rounds. Emil Hermansson,=20
Jan Rabe, and Richard Bjerke shared the lead after two rounds with Jan=20
Palmgren.

Before round 3, the traditional mulled wine and ginger cookies were=20
served, which seemed suitable in the darkness and winter cold. A nice=20
tradition, if I may say so myself...

Strenghtened by the mulled wine, Richard Bjerke won against Jan=20
Palmgren and Emil won against Jan Rabe. Thereby, Richard and Emil could=20
feel satisfied with their first day. Further back in the field, Ulf=20
succeeded to win against Terje in a strange game. Ulf had to give up a=20
silver general and got an unfriendly promoted rook close to his sitting=20
king. Ulf, however, succeeded to defend and counter-attacked. Suddenly,=20
Terje resigned, since he thought he saw a tsume attack by Ulf, but that=20
was a ghost. One more gold general in hand would have been needed for=20
Ulf... Thus, Terje was not a realistic candidate to win the tournament=20
any more.

Sunday morning 08.30, the clocks were started for the fourth round=20
with a final game between Emil and Richard. Emil succeeded to win after=20
strong defence, and it looked like Richard should have to wait one more=20
year to win this tournament. In the 11 to 15-kyu group, there was a=20
final game between Jan-Olof and Therese, playing her first ever shogi=20
tournament. The game was won by Jan-Olof. In the rating group 6 to 10-
kyu, the two rating rockets of the WOSC 2005, Peder Gedda and Richard=20
Skotnicki, played against each other. Richard won. In the rating group=20
1 to 5-kyu, Ulf won against Jan P., while Jonas won against Jan R.=20
Thereby, Ulf was in the lead of that rating group.

In round 5, Emil had to play against sincerely yours, who had fought=20
his way back after losing in the first round. Emil went a little wrong=20
in the opening, and could not turn the tables. Richard won against=20
Jonas and Ulf won against Niklas Alexandersson, the 2004 Swedish=20
Championship Challenger finalist.

Those results gave the following situation before the final round:=20
Emil was going to win the tournament if he won against Jonas. If that=20
failed, the winner would instead be the winner between Richard and Ulf.=20
Emil blundered and lost a rook against Jonas. Thus Richard could cruise=20
to victory by winning against Ulf. It seemed fair that Richard finally=20
could win the tournament. Sincerely yours played brilliantly against=20
Terje (an illegal move in an unclear position...), and could thereby=20
secure the runner-up position. Emil was third. Ulf was the tournament=20
rating rocket (+120 points) was number four and got promoted to 4-kyu.=20
He also won the rating group 1 to 5-kyu. Mikael Hansson was the winner=20
in the group 6 to 10-kyu, and the last tin cup was won by Jan-Olof=20
Helm.

The tournament director wishes to thank everyone for showing interest=20
in our tournament and wants to see you again next year.

Sincerely yours,

Carl Johan Nilsson
