From: trick77 gmx de Date: 13 oct 2007 Subject: RE: SPIEL 07 in Essen Hello Manabu, I don=92t know who will be exhibiting this year, but judging from the past= =20 years, almost all kinds of boardgames were presented, ranging from games= =20 for children to family games (Settlers of Catan and the like) to war=20 games or complex simulations. While the focus is clearly on family games= =20 with a theme, you can also find a lot of two player abstract strategy=20 games (mainly new designs, most notably Kris Burm=92s Gipf Project, which= =20 was clearly inspired by classics like checkers, Reversi, Hex, etc.) One= =20 reason for this might be the fact that it=92s a huge commercial event,=20 where you cannot only try but also buy the upcoming releases for the=20 first time.=20 Nonetheless, you will almost certainly find booths dedicated entirely to= =20 classic boardgames like Western Chess or Go/Igo, primarily with the=20 intention to promote and popularize these games. While I=92ve seen games= =20 like chess and Go being promoted regularly in the last couple of years,= =20 I can=92t remember seeing a booth that showed games like Xiangqi or Shogi= =20 (which I regret). The closest game to Shogi (apart from chess) I have=20 ever seen there was Navia Dratp by Bandai. I don=92t know if it can be=20 regarded as a Shogi variant (it varies a lot), but it=92s pretty obvious= =20 that Shogi and not Western Chess served as an example. =20 Especially Shogi is almost totally unknown in Germany. Since over=20 150.000 visitors come from countries as far away as Australia, USA, and=20 Japan every year, a Shogi booth might be a good way to promote it not=20 only in Germany but also worldwide.
