*I should note that even the "forward capture only" feature of pawn 
might not be an influence from Xiangqi because, for some reason, the 
authors of Heian Shogi decided to radically reduce the powers of the 
pieces.  The "forward capture only" feature might be a result of power 
reduction rather than influence from Xiangqi.

**If the "forward capture only" feature is not a Xiangqi influence, then 
Shog is about as similar to the Chinese Xiangqi as to the Korean Janggi. 
 This, however, might not complicate the problem as much as some might 
think, because Janggi and Xiangqi are extremely similar.  In fact, 
Janggi very likely originated from a variant of Xiangqi.  We can simply 
categorize both Xiangqi and Janggi's potential influences on Shogi as 
the "Xiangqi/Janggi influences."
