I don't know there had been a similar coding effort by someone for shogi in Japan. But I think the delay of building shogi database comparing with chess has invited us to use GUI instead of depending upon the coding system like ECO. Let me give you an example. Please go to the following page. http://yakan.flatz.jp/chokyokumen/search.php There is an empty shogi board on the page. Please place black's King on 9i and White's King on 9a and Rook on 4b. Then push the button above the white's piece table. You will get 20 positions with K on 9a and 9i and R on 4b which is both Anaguma and Shikenbisha(4th file Rook) on the right side of the page. This is a trial sample of "Chou Kyokumen" which I think is a webtop position database. The way of searching a position is almost the same as "Kifu Data 200X" sold by JSA. If you place more pieces on the squares, you will get more precisely the positions you like to see. So I don't think we have practical motivation to build a coding system like ECO. But I may be wrong as I'm not a database designer/programmer. > By the way: > would it be possible to download all games played at SC24??? > This would be an important thing for an index-system. When you have > thousands and more games, it's important to have an index-system that > you will find the games which are interestingly for you. I don't know very well. Only I know is the site says you can copy & paste the games one-by-one. It's not for shogi, but reversi in Kurni. It was announced that it allows you to download monthly archives all in one file. Please refer to the following Kurnik blog entry. http://www.kurnik.org/blog/?20060925 I think you can ask Kurnik to let you do the same for shogi.
