In a kif & ki2=20=20 description file sent by him (in Japanese), a shogi position is a=20=20 multi line description with one line for each line of the board,=20=20 lines for pieces in hand. Each piece has its kanji representation,=20=20 with a "v" for gote's pieces. I find the FEN notation more convenient to store a board description.
