From: David J Bush cstone net> Date: 24 jan 2007 Subject: Re: First draft of the Universal Shogi Interface (USI) It looks great! GUI talking to the engine: Is there a way to tell the engine what time control will be used? Time controls for shogi usually involve an initial time followed by "byo-yomi time." For example, 30 minutes and 30 seconds byoyomi is not unusual. Once you enter byoyomi, you have 30 seconds to make your move, and when you do, your clock returns to 30 seconds. One point I'm not clear about, maybe someone else could help: I'm not sure if you enter byoyomi when your initial time goes below 30 seconds (or whatever byoyomi is,) or if byoyomi starts only when your initial time reaches zero. Of course both ways could be regarded as the same except one way starts with 30 seconds more on the player's clock than the other way. At any rate, an increment on each move, like on the ICC chess server, is rarely used in shogi. It might be useful for the engine to know how long the byoyomi period is in a game.
