Yes, I have seen those, and I don't think they are what I'm looking for. The CSA Shogi protocol seems to be designed to allow several computers to simultaneously connect to a central server and play against each other, and although I am sure it works very well for this purpose, it doesn't seem very well suited for communication between a GUI and a engine running on the same computer. On the other hand, if we agree on a USI (or whatever) protocol, an adapter which connects a USI shogi engine to a CSA server could be an interesting and useful piece of software. Xshogi is closer to what I am looking for, but it is very poorly documented, and more complicated and less flexible than I would like. If there were already a lot of shogi engines running in the Xshogi interface, it might have been a good starting point, but as far as I know there are none except GNU shogi (please correct me if I am wrong). I think designing something from the ground up without regard to backward compatibility would be a better approach. > I wonder if ratings lists exist in the Japanese computer shogi community > and if they do not exist then why? Almost certainly because there is no easy way to run long, automated matches and tournaments between the programs. This is one of the things I hope we can change. > These are probably over 80 shogi programming teams. Wow, that's a lot. This is a bigger community than I thought. :-) > Your effort to create a strong shogi engine and then give it away to > help computer shogi programmers is generous. Good luck. Maybe next year ...
