Unlike the western chess or go society, the shogi world lacks the wealth of software, teaching materials or books reviews on the net. Or at least non-japanese speaking world :-) But I think the situation is slowly changing. There is Reijer Grimbergen's Shogi page (http://gamelab.yz.yamagata-u.ac.jp/SHOGI/shogipage.html), Takodori's Entrance to Shogi World (http://redsun.gmby.net/2006/12/shogi-japanese-chess.html), there is... Well, I am affraid that's about it. Just kidding. There are many others. But what's more important, there are people -- like here on shogi-l -- who wish to share their knowledge and experience. > So, as a fun side project (I am a Computer Science student after all :)) > > I have been working on a Shogi server similar in functionality (and > hopefully once it is finished, similar in status) to KGS. Good luck with your attempt. I think many of us are waiting for something like this. I don't know what technology You would use for your project, nor what would be your primary focus (the client, the server side, the database subsystem), but maybe this links would useful for you: 1. http://www.computer-shogi.org/index_e.html -- Computer Shogi Association web page. Contains World Computer Shogi Championship results, their Game Programming Workshop information and CSA SHOGI (protocol for computers to play Shogi) specification. 2. If Your platform is Java, then maybe you could reuse some code from open sourced Jose (http://jose-chess.sourceforge.net/) - feature-rich client for storing and browsing chess games. 3. If You are developing in C++, maybe SCID (http://scid.sourceforge.net/), a free chess database app, could be reused? As a computer science student and a GO player You probably have Your own materials, but I hope my links help you. > I could devise my own > format, but I would prefer to respect the standards that already exist > in the Shogi community. I sought for some specification myself but I failed. If you find it, please let us know. > I can learn from, but I would rather have some solid documentation to > use, in case > my examples are not a COMPLETE implementation of the standard. GNU Shogi Database (http://www.ibridge.be/shogi/) goes with Java source code. As far as I remember it can read PSN. Once again, good luck with Your project! And, please, keep us informed!
