From: Pieter Stouten shogi net> Date: 8 jan 2007 Subject: 6th Italian Open Shogi Championship Please find below the results of the 6th Italian Open Shogi Championship, held in Milan, Italy on 9 and 10 December 2006. We were happy to welcome European Champion Arend van Oosten and hope that his example will be followed next year by other strong players. We also hope that next year the Italian Open will not coincide with the Paris tournament. that's why I announce already now that the 7th Italian Open will be held on 8 and 9 December 2007 (99% sure). During the first 3 rounds handicaps were employed as a group of people participated in a multi-game event (of which Shogi was one), akin to Mind Sports Olympiad's Pentamind, and rather than playing among themselves they wanted to have the opportunity to play gainst players they would normally not play against. A second consideration was that games between rated and unrated players help establish the latter's Elo ratings faster. Despite my less than stellar performance, I enjoyed the tournament very much and so did all others that I talked to. Giuseppe Baggio had organized the event very well and I do hope his plans to organize a tournament in Venice will come to fruition.
