From: DANERUD MARTIN comhem se> Date: 26 sep 2006 Subject: Sv: International Mind Sports Association Dear Paul, One obvious question in this context is of course if this organisation=20 has any contacts with the Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO), now again based=20 in London, and the David Levy group. I do not say so because the MSO is=20 working perfectly or that they should have any particular patent of the=20 idea. I just mention it, since the MSO has existed for ten years and=20 have actually had experiences in this field. To your questions, I do not know if anyone is trying to get shogi=20 involved. I do not think so. Secondly, there is no world body for=20 shogi. The closest one may come is the Nihon Shogi Renmei (NSR), the=20 Japan Shogi Association, which is organized by and for professional=20 shogi players in Japan. NSR has also run the International Shogi Forum=20 and other amateur activities in Japan. We have a very good relation=20 with NSR, and they have helped shogi a lot in Europe. I have tried to raise the question of a world shogi body, but the fact=20 is that NSR would not recognize such an organisation, which they think=20 would threaten their position (in a continuously shrinking, mainly=20 Japanese shogi world). I have also been ridiculed by some individuals=20 on Shogi-L because of my support for a world shogi body, which would be=20 the best step to make shogi a truly international mind sport. Probably,=20 those individuals were embarrassed confronting the truth (it was like=20 someone saying that we should end the wars, since wars bring misery to=20 the world; it is easy to ridicule, since it has never happened, and=20 most persons may think that it will never happen). In 2002, I brought=20 up the issue at a meeting at the 2nd International Shogi Forum, chaired=20 by Aono-sensei, but after one minute of embarrassing silence, the=20 Brazilian representative (an exile Japanese) brought up the idea of=20 translating shogi books to Portuguese... At the moment the association is only Chess, Go, Bridge and Draughts. Is there anyone trying to get Shogi involved with this (is there=20 actually a=20 world body for Shogi?)?
