Pl= ayers are assigned to six teams, nominally representing NY, D.C., Chicago, = L.A., S.F., and "other". Players from one city may be assigned to play for = another city in order to equalize the number of players per team, and to so= me extent to minimize the strength difference between teams. Players on eac= h team must play in the board order determined by their Pan-Atlantic rating= s. If the number of players is not divisible by six, extra players will eit= her play a single or double round robin, or may be assigned as alternates f= or the last board on teams. The professional players in attendance may be i= nvited to play top board or boards on the weakest team or teams to even out= the size and/or strength of the teams; if so they will play their games at= bishop handicap if on top board or rook handicap if on second board. The s= ix teams will play a round robin on Saturday, April 1. All games are Pan-At= lantic rated and played at 15' plus 40" per move byo-yomi. This event will = determine the team champion (game points decide, with match points as a tie= -break) as well as qualification for the "A" and "B" groups on Sunday and t= he seeding for those groups.=20 Scoring in the team events is number of wins minus 1.1 times board num= ber. Ties are broken by sum of defeated opponents scores, and if still tied= by result of actual game between tied players. Players in a residual group= (not on a team) are deemed to be on the highest board number plus one. Pla= yers who play less than the full five rounds get credit for 1/2 a win for e= ach unplayed game. If players in the residual group play more than five gam= es, their scores are decreased by 1/2 for each extra game.=20 After computing scores from Saturday's play, players finishing in the = top half are assigned to the "A" group, the others to the "B" group. Within= each group, players are listed in order of their Saturday scores. The A an= d B groups are both knockout events, paired with standard knockout pairings= as follows: (top half)1 vs16, 8 vs 9, 5 vs 12, 4 vs 13, bottom half 6 vs 1= 1, 3 vs 14, 7 vs 10, 2 vs 15. So, for example, if there are 13 players in a group, players 1= , 2, and 3 will get byes for the first Sunday round. Once a player is knock= ed out, he may play teaching games with pros or extra rated games with othe= r knocked-out players. The B group is handicapped, using sente for 1 rank d= ifference, lance for 2, bishop for 3, rook for 4, rook and lance for 5, two= piece for 6, four piece for 7, five piece right for 8, and six piece for 9= or more. Nominal ranks may be adjusted based on the experience of the firs= t day's play. All games in both groups Pan-Atlantic rated. Discussion: This format is designed to accomplish several goals. Almos= t all players are guaranteed to play at least six rated games, mostly with = players not too disparate in strength. Games between players from the same = city are minimized. Players scoring best the first day have the easiest sch= edule on the second day; the two best scoring players on the first day can'= t meet until the final.=20 Schedule (tentative): Saturday rounds at 9 a.m., 10:30, 12:30, 2:00, a= nd 3:30. If time permits, a special event involving the pros will take plac= e immediately after the fifth round. Sunday rounds 9 a.m., 10:30, 12:00, an= d 1:30, with the final game immediately after the end of the fourth round. = In the event that time permits, the final will be at a longer initial time = control.=20 Anyone with comments on the above should email me at lkaufman@comcast.= net before this is finalized.
