In= =20 Japan the computer shogi people told me that Bonanza was considered to be o= n=20 the same level as the top four programs in the computer shogi tournaments,= =20 but that it was very different from the others, in that it is patterned=20 after chess programs much more so than the other programs. They explained= =20 that when the pc ran at much slower speeds a decade ago this approach was= =20 not competitive, but at current pc speeds it is. This was confirmed when a= =20 kyu player told me that he was able to win about one out of three or four= =20 games from Bonanza, but it turned out that he was running it on a ten year= =20 old computer. Since the top pc shogi programs have SC24 ratings in the 2400 vicinity= ,=20 presumably Bonanza would also have such a rating on a fast pc, which=20 corresponds to five Dan on their scale and probably to six Dan in most shog= i=20 clubs. I think it's about equal to Pro 1 or 2 Dan. My own experience is that if I leave it on the default of 5" per move,= =20 but take plenty of time myself, I can sometimes win, but if I give it 30"= =20 per move and play about that speed myself, I have hardly any chance. Mr.= =20 Yoshinari, our local Japanese amateur 4 Dan, plays it often on the 5" level= =20 (taking perhaps three or four times that himself), and wins about one out o= f=20 ten. So I guess this all agrees with your experience.
