It=20 is a wonderful atmosphere where we all enjoy different aspects of=20 international shogi and culture. Positive events this far: + The young girl Manao Kagawa, winner of the 37th Lady Amateur Meijin=20 Tournament, has beaten three strong Europeans: van Oosten, Jensson, and=20 Mirnik, and has thus scored 100% during the first day. + The tea ceremony and the dedication by professionals of books etc=20 with calligraphic greetings and names is a wonderful display of ancient=20 Japanese culture. Less positive events this far: - The Japanese team, which three years ago was a winning team with two=20 young players at the last boards, is now a losing team displaying some=20 nice elderly gentlemen on the last boards, who probably earned their=20 ratings a long time ago. Of course, those honourable gentlemen did=20 their very best, but the decision of playing with this Japanese team in=20 the tournament is making the pairings a lottery, so that it is=20 impossible to know in advance what the Japanese team really is. This=20 year, they were a lucky draw for England and Brazil, but three years=20 ago, they proved impossible to every other team. That is like suddenly=20 switching the shower from burning hot to icing cold. - The BIG confusion when pairing the individual tournament. It took 25=20 minutes to do the pairing of twenty players with 0, 1, or 2 points=20 before the third round, which is normally a task solved in one minute=20 or less. On top of all, the pairing and the loud speaker announcements=20 went on 25 minutes after the games of the team tournament had started.=20 The story was repeated from three years ago.
