Apparently this indicates a = growing willingness to experiment with non-traditional handicaps, though it= might just reflect Mr. Kanki's willingness to be an entertainer.=20 Second, one pro (Katsumata) told me that when he plays someone too wea= k for six piece handicap (but presumably too strong for eight), he keeps ro= ok, bishop, and pawns only. This form of eight piece handicap could be cons= idered an intermediate step, though one can also just play at seven piece h= andicap (keeping two golds and a silver).=20 Third, there was some discussion of silver handicap, the most respecti= ble of the non-standard handicaps. Mr. Ishikawa (Pro 6 Dan) told me that he= sometimes gives this handicap, but that in his opinion it was actually a l= arger handicap than bishop!!! His reasoning was that there are some drawbac= ks to having a bishop handicap (it can be a target, and it gets in the way = of castling), whereas an extra silver is automatically of value as part of = the castle. While I think he may have been exaggerating a bit with this cla= im, the point is that if you have to debate which handicap is larger, then = silver handicap cannot fill the role of an intermediate handicap between la= nce and bishop, something I've always thought was needed in shogi. Knight h= andicap is possible but probably too close to lance for this purpose. So th= ere may be no "clean" solution to this problem; if there were one, it would= probably already be in use.=20 Larry Kaufman Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Need a new Cell Phone?
