Goteborg was chosen as the venue, but the co-hosting chess tournament= =20 Goteborg Open was cancelled one day before the start, so there were not=20 so many spectators this time as we have usually had. Peter Kaneko and Chris= ter=20 Hartman had qualified for the Challenger final at the Swedish Shogi Champio= nship=20 tournament in April.=20 Peter Kaneko played a good first game, where he defended well and used=20 the thinking time well. However, after getting a much better position in= =20 the second game, Peter blundered and let Christer into the match. Christer= =20 won the third game relatively easily after fighting back a relatively loose= =20 attack from Peter. Thus, Christer had reached the final after 2 to 1 in=20 the Challenger final.=20 In the first game of the final, Christer had to face a central counter=20 attack from Carl Johan Nilsson, but he managed to defend and finally he=20 found a winning attack. Carl Johan got the better position in the second= =20 game, after Christer had put his king in a difficult position. That was=20 enough to win the game. The third final game was tough again, but Christer= =20 started an attack, which later helped him to escape with his king to Carl= =20 Johans lower right corner. In that position, Carl Johan seemed a little=20 bit confused and tired, so he did not go for jishogi, but attacked for a= =20 mate instead. However, that just cost him material, and Carl Johan lost=20 after not finding any good move in the one minute byo-yomi.=20 Thus, Christer just needed one more win out of two games to win the title= =20 and the first board position of the Swedish team in the 3rd International= =20 Shogi Forum. Carl Johan fought well in the last game, but he happened to= =20 run into one of the favourite variations of Christer, so Christer could=20 make his moves more easily. Finally, Christer found a tsume, and Carl Johan= =20 had lost his Swedish Champioship title after one year. The result also mean= t=20 that Jan Palmgren will play at the kyu board in the 3rd International Shogi= =20 Forum for Sweden.=20 The position at the dan board will be decided in a best-of-three games=20 match between Carl Johan Nilsson and Peter Kaneko at the game festival LinC= on=20 in Linkoping, June 18 to 19.=20 Best regards,=20 Martin Danerud, President of the Swedish Shogi Federation Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Need a Laptop?
