Promotions: Rikard Skotnicki to 8-kyu Peder Gedda to 14-kyu The surprise of the first round was of course that Robert lost to Peder. On= e could not help thinking about the first round game of the Swedish Shogi Championship, when Robert now lost on time in a somewhat bett= er position in byo-yomi. In the second round, Terje and Jonas played at the first board. It became a= duel with both players playing the ibisha. Terje knew some opening theory of his chosen variation, but Jonas did not. Perhaps Ter= je had an advantageous position, but Jonas came back and won the game. The evening round of the first day did not give any real surprises. Martin = won quickly against Niklas, as his central attack cut like a hot knife through butter. That was an indication of a bad tournament for = Niklas who had had two simple games in the beginning of the tournament. Jonas won against Robert, but maybe Robert should have had = the point in that game. In the Sunday morning round, Jonas played against Martin in an early final = game. The game was somewhat unclear in the beginning, when Jonas got some promoted pieces in attacking territory. The = counter attack was however good. A promoted rook and two tokin were rumbling through Jonas defence. Martin did not find a fo= rced win and instead chose to threaten mate in several ways. Then Jonas had to find a tsume. He played a continuation which could = have been a real tsume, which anyway resulted in a mate variation. In the post mortem analysis it was found that there was a w= ay to defend. That is life for shogi amateurs like ourselves... Meantime, Terje lost surprisingly to Robin. The only possible dan players game followed in round five. Terje pushed for= ward an attacking gold general against nakabisha, but=20 Martin had studied this variation after his victory against Christer Hartma= n after a middle game nifu in the Swedish Championship tournament in April. Now, all generals around Terje=B4s king were removed b= y the attacking forces, and the lonely king close to the rook lost after Martin had secured against any counter attacks. Already before round six, Jonas had won the tournament. We did not understa= nd that in advance, but since all results in the last=20 round were advantageous to Martin, and Jonas still won with the smallest of= margins, there was nothing more to do than giving=20 Jonas the congratulations. Daniel secured his third position by winning aga= inst Jonas after a successively escalated king side=20 attack. All three top players in this tournament found out how difficult it= is to actually win all games in a tournament. Martin won=20 against Robert after having found a beautiful move in a middle of a planned= combination. After that Robert was more or less lost. Jonas won the rating prize for 1-kyu to 5-kyu. Daniel was the best player w= ith 6-kyu to 10-kyu, and Peder won the prize for 11-kyu to=20 15-kyu. As a conclusion, it could be said that Jonas, who was in his prime in Troll= hattan Open and the ESC/WOSC 2003, now seems to=20 develop further. Now, he won against yet two more dan players. Jonas decide= s for himself when to become a dan player. I was very satisfied with my own games except the ending against Jonas. However, there= are other players who did not participate in this=20 tournament, who usually cause me bigger problems. Maybe I can learn somethi= ng by studying the play-off match for the dan position=20 in the Swedish team for the 3rd International Shogi Forum in two weeks in L= inkoping between Carl Johan Nilsson and Peter Kaneko? Daniel has previously, together with Peder, played some kind of mad shogi. = After thousands of games at www.shogidojo.com,=20 however without any real rating improvements there, Daniel has learnt a lot= of typical positions in his openings and several attacking patterns. That makes him a rather good shogi player by just using pattern r= ecognition. Somewhat typical, Terje, who is a good=20 shogi defender but did not score so well this weekend, won against both Dan= iel and Peder.=20 The number of participants was not so good. However, the Swedish National D= ay on June 6 was this year for the first time ever a=20 national holiday, so some players preferred other activities during the thr= ee days holiday. Next year, we will have more participants! Now we are looking forward to: The dan position play-off match, June 18 to June 19 Shogi at the Swedish Chess Championship from July 2 until July 10 with Shog= i in Slottsskogen on July 9 ESC/WOSC in Pardubice in the Czech Republic, July 14 to July 17 and=20 The Swedish Shogi Team Championship, July 30 to July 31 Best regards,=20 Martin Danerud, President of the Swedish Shogi Federation Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Need a new washer and dryer set?
