It was a round-robin, with all games playe= d even this time. Although I was absent, there were several Japanese in the= 3-4 Dan range, so this was quite a surprising result.=20 Secondly, further feedback on the free shogi software "Bonanza". Today= Mr. Yoshinari, a well-established Japanese amateur 4 Dan player, played at= least ten games with it, taking sente and unlimited time (though he did pl= ay rather quickly), while the computer was only allowed 5 seconds per move.= Despite this large handicap, the computer won every game, although Mr. Yos= hinari would have won one game except for a mouse-slip (there is no apparen= t way to retract a move). This suggests that the program is on a par with J= apanese amateur 6 Dan players, which is consistent with the recent result o= f another program scoring 3 out of 4 against top amateurs in the ama Ryuoh = tournament. It seems that the programs are on the verge of being able to ch= allenge low-ranked pros on even terms. In view of the recent success of the super-computer system "Hydra" in = crushing one of the world's best chess players (Micky Adams) by 5 1/2 to 1/= 2 in a serious match, one can only wonder what a similar project for shogi = could accomplish. My guess is that such a machine with a comparable program= ming effort would be able to play shogi on a par with fairly strong pros, t= hough not yet with the title holders. But it may be only a few years before= a super-computer can topple Habu in a match, if anyone devotes the effort = to make it happen.
