In my view, the Meijin is= =20 the World Professional Champion, and the Ryu-O is the "World Champion",=20 because in theory any player in the world could become Ryu-O, since=20 foreigners are sometimes given a slot in the Amateur Ryu-O, and the winner= =20 of that plays in the Pro Ryu-O. There is also the Shogi Forum tournament,= =20 which is held every three years, and the winner of that could be considered= =20 World Amateur Champion, except for the fact that the Japanese representativ= e=20 in that event may not be the Japanese Amateur champion (or may not even be = a=20 particularly strong player). Finally, a few years ago a "World Championship= "=20 was held in New York, but since it was only open to players living outside= =20 Japan, it was obviously misnamed.
