As every year we=20 stayed at the castle Schwaneck. The whole castle and Youthhostle have=20 been renovated over the last two years. The renovation is not yet=20 finished completely. But most seminar rooms and the whole accomodation=20 area are finished now. The bed rooms are in very good condition! If I=20 have had such good over night stay in the hotel the week before, I would= =20 have been happy. This year we played in a small room in the third floor. We could not=20 play outside on the balcony this time, but we could enjoy a very nice=20 view over the Isar valley from above. One disadvantage of the renovated=20 (pseudo-historic) rooms is that we are not allowed to drink any tea or=20 coffee in the rooms. Therefore we had to sip our tea on the corridor=20 infront. The number of participants droped to less than half the number of 2003.=20 Nevertheless we were enough players to enjoy some good games! In the blitz-tournament we played all play all with only six=20 participants. Three players shared the first place with only one loss:=20 Asle Olufsen, Boris Mirnik and Jochen Drechsler. The main tournament started with only three dan-players. But the player=20 field promised exciting games throughout. We set the pairing programme=20 such that the top players do not meet before the fourth round. Until the fourth round the results were more or less than expected.=20 However many games showed a close fight that could have ended either=20 way. In the fourth round only two players had remained without a loss.=20 In their encounter Boris Mirnik showed that he is getting back in form=20 as he bet Jochen Drechsler. Not satisfied with his form was Thomas=20 Pfaffel who lost against Alexander Rossmanith. In round 5 Thomas Pfaffel came back (to the second place) with a win=20 over Jochen Drechsler. Boris Mirnik secured his lead and stayed unbeaten until the end. He is=20 the clear winner of the tournament. The second place however was decided in the very last second. When all=20 games were already finished, only Thomas Pfaffel and Norbert Sch=E4fer=20 were engaged in a close endgame fight. For a long time Thomas seemed=20 lost, but he managed to stay alive for a long time. Finally Norbert won.= =20 Therefore Thomas lost second place to Jochen Drechsler. On third place came Alexander Rossmanith who started to hope for the=20 kyu-place in the team for the Shogi Forum. Shogi can be played at all ages. This tournament is proof of this. The=20 oldest player but still in good form was Leo Dreblow with over 70 years!= =20 The youngest player was Jan Geldsetzer at 14 years. He played well in=20 his first tournament. Without much practice against "real" shogi players= =20 he was able to bring some of them in real trouble and also won one game. The thinking time of 45 minutes and 30 seconds accumulation (fisher=20 mode) was very much. Most games ended without much time trouble, but the= =20 breaks between the rounds were to short for those with the longest=20 games. Next year I will opt for 40=B4 + 30=B4=B4 accumulation. Some players= =20 needed one or two games to get used to this time mode. The general=20 opinion was that this mode is good and usefull. It leaves more time for=20 the endgame. You can either save some time for the endgame or accumulate= =20 it again with some fast moves. Jochum. Here are the results with the tournament performance rating after the=20 names. The first number in brackets is the starting rating.
