It is= basically a joint meeting of the NY and D.C. shogi clubs, with the players= all staying in a rented house with food there, permitting a large number o= f rated games to be played. Unfortunately the weekend chosen seemed to conf= lict with many players' commitments, so only 7 shogi players attended, rang= ing from 2 Dan to 5 dan. On the plus side, we were able to complete a doubl= e round robin. Handicaps were sente for 1 rank difference, bishop for two r= anks, and rook for three. Winner with 8 out of 12 was the lowest ranked player, my son Raymond K= aufman 2 Dan. He not only scored 5 out of 8 in his handicap games, but mana= ged to score 3 out of 4 in his "even" (except for playing first) games agai= nst the 3 Dan players. While this will probably not suffice for promotion t= o 3 Dan, it should put him reasonably close to that goal.=20 Second place with 7 out of 12 was a tie between myself and Takeshi Tak= ahashi, both playing as 5 Dan. He is a Japanese student in Baltimore Maryla= nd. While not formally a 5 Dan, he agreed to play at this rank based on his= high Shogi Club 24 rating. Curiously, we not only split our individual gam= es but made identical scores against each other Dan level. In between tourn= ament games, he also played many rapid games, including a series with a 4 D= an player in which he played with a ten second per move time limit, while t= he 4 Dan got ten more seconds per move after each loss (or ten less after a= win), and was eventually driven to odds of 1 minute to 10 seconds per move= ! Counting all these rapid games, T. T. played close to 25 games this weeke= nd! Tied for fourth with an even 6-6 score were Jiro Yoshinari of D.C. and= K. Numagami of Pennsylvania, both 4 Dan. S. Ogihara of NY scored 5-7 and M= r. Noma of NY scored 3-9, both playing as 3 Dan. Despite the poor attendance, it was a very enjoyable and high-level ev= ent. Hopefully the next one will draw more players. Larry Kaufman, tournament director.
