George mentioned in an email to me that he thought one of the magazine issues (the old SHOGI magazine which ended in 1987) had an article on pre-modern Japanese shogi notation (before the use of Arabic numbers, at least) and that Chinese zodiac symbols were used for co-ordinates. He couldn't remember which issue it was. Does anyone have this article and can tell me the issue number or month/year so I can order it from George Hodges? I'm familiar with Japanese notation for modern standard shogi but I hadn't seen Japanese-style Chu Shogi scores until I discovered a link to the Chu Shogi Renmei from the Lucky Dog Games site: http://chushogi-renmei.com/kouza/KIFU/kifu-a.htm http://chushogi-renmei.com/kouza/KIFU/kifu-b.htm http://chushogi-renmei.com/kouza/KIFU/kifu-c.htm http://chushogi-renmei.com/kouza/KIFU/kifu-d.htm It looks like fairly straightforward adaptation of standard Japanese shogi notation. However, a few things I noticed: The scores use full two-character symbols for all the pieces (except pawns) although the diagrams use one-character abbreviations. Is there a reason for the two-character usage? Would this be done in a handwritten score? I see some examples of igui captures by the Lion (move 97 in game "a") but I don't see any non-capturing igui moves. Does anyone know how this would be represented? Does a non-capturing igui move have a "destination" square? Would the Lion symbol followed by the "igui" characters suffice? Is this how it's done? ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
