Thankfully, Mr. Ted Hsu wrote an excellent report for Shogi-L back on April= =20 20. I haven't much to add, other than my own personal experience and the= =20 various attached tournament charts. I echo his remarks regarding the timely= =20 and beautifully organized Cherry Blossom Festival and the splendid=20 performances by Master Tanaka's Taiko Drum Troupe. We truly appreciated the participation of eight professional shogi players,= =20 coming from Japan; Thirty-five U.S. players; And, numerous guests and=20 family members coming from 12 states. Five active shogi clubs were represen= ted. It was a wonderful first visit to San Francisco for me. Everything went=20 very smoothly, both within and without the tournament, and it was great to= =20 see my many friends from all over America. I shared a room with Mr. Bekele,= =20 formerly from NY, who now lives in Arizona. The weather was great and I had= =20 a chance to do ample sightseeing, including a nice dinner "by the bay" at= =20 Fisherman's Wharf on the Friday night preceding the event. My shogi play was a little less satisfactory. I lost one key game which=20 knocked me out of the A tournament in the round of 16. It was my first loss= =20 to Mr. Yamamura LA 4Dan, over-the-board, and a game in which I had a=20 comfortable advantage. To his credit, he found an unlikely excellent move= =20 in the middle-game, that turned the game around, and played very well after= =20 that. I played my best shogi in the Team Match Competition and at the Taiko Drum= =20 Dojo, where a casual and very pleasant atmosphere prevailed, following the= =20 special Taiko Drum concert held for us. Two of my four team game wins=20 clinched 4-3 team match victories for NY, including the last game against= =20 Mr. Bekele [playing for the Chicago team]. My team game against Mr. Nishio= =20 Pro 6Dan (Pro team) at Rook handicap was declared a draw, by pro's=20 judgement, when we were running late and holding up the schedule, in a=20 balanced game. Due to the tight schedule, it was hard to follow many games. Generally,=20 many players played very well at times. Mr. Ogihara 4Dan from NY defeated= =20 one of the tournament favorites, Mr. Takahashi (unofficial 5Dan and 2000+= =20 shogi dojo rated), in the round of 16. Greg D'Elia played very well in the= =20 B League, including the exciting final game with Mr. Hayashi. Mr. Tamaki= =20 from DC was very patient, in a double-Anaguma game, and overcame a=20 determined Mr. K. Matsumoto from Oregon in the A Class Quarter-finals.=20 Kento brought a small legion of fellow Oregonian classmates and shogi=20 players with him! Tournament winner, SF's Mr. Y. Suzuki 4Dan, had to beat the always tough= =20 Mr. Yoshinari DC 4Dan and "dark horse" Mr. Nakamaru, who was fresh from his= =20 impressive 9-3 NY A Class League performance [tied for first], on his way= =20 to the Finals. Suzuki's aggressive play, sharp openings and fast moving=20 style were ideally suited for the 20/30 time limit. Soon after the event, following a visit to Washington DC, Mr. Ishikawa, Pro= =20 6Dan, came to NY. I attended a baseball game with him and managed a good= =20 win at Rook handicap in our one-on-one untimed game. A couple of days after that, four other pros, Ohno 6Dan, Nozuki 6Dan, Nakai= =20 Ladies' 2-Kan and Nishio 4Dan, came to NY for sightseeing and more shogi(!)= =20 at a special club meeting. They enjoyed a Broadway musical. I played my=20 best game against Mr. Nozuki Pro 6Dan, winning at Rook handicap. This time= =20 it was a one-on-one 20 Minutes plus 40 seconds byoyomi game. My other=20 highlights included teaching darts to Ms. Nakai and Mr. Nishio at an Irish= =20 bar. They both showed some talent! I hope to share with you some pictures from all of these events soon.
