This year, it was also the Swedish Grand Prix=20 tournament. In 2002, there were 18 participants, last year 15=20 participants, and this year there were 16 participants. Already before the tournament, it could be observed that there were=20 four virtual groups of four players each. The top group consisted of=20 the dan players. The new Swedish Champion, Carl Johan Nilsson, had to=20 face the Swedish Champion 2000, Peter Kaneko, one of the two Norwegian=20 dan players, Terje Christoffersen, and the 2003 Swedish Championship=20 finalist, Martin Danerud. Then there were the strongest kyu players: Jonas Ahlqvist, Niklas=20 Alexandersson, Robert Soderberg, and Jan Rabe. The next group consisted=20 of the somewhat weaker kyu players: Mikael Hansson, Daniel Wredenberg,=20 Bo Flood, and Daniel Ivarsson. The players in the last group were the=20 beginners who did not yet have a kyu rating: Peder Gedda, Thorbjorn=20 Lund, Takeo Nasu (Japan), and Tommy Claesborn. Actually, the final result confirmed these virtual groups, except for=20 Takeo Nasu, who has started to practice shogi, while living in Sweden=20 during the last months (!). In the beginner group, thus Takeo Nasu was the best player. He also won=20 the rating prize as the best player with 11-kyu and below. Peder and=20 Thorbjorn are reaching some shape in their games. It would have been=20 interesting to see a game between those players.=20 Mikael was the best among the weaker kyu players. He also won the=20 rating prize as the best player between 6-kyu and 10-kyu. Mikael has=20 not yet lost a shogi game against any player with a lower ELO rating=20 than himself. The three Trollhattan players, the two Daniels and Bo,=20 are developing steadily. It could be oberved that they had good shape=20 in parts of their games, but lost it when exchanges and drops increased=20 the complexity of the games. Unfortunately, none of the players in this=20 group played against any of the other players in the group. Among the somewhat stronger kyu players, Jan was the only one to score=20 4 points. Thus he won the rating prize as the best player with 1-kyu to=20 5-kyu, and he also received two Grand Prix points. Niklas played stable=20 games as usual, but his loss to Jonas limited the success this time.=20 Niklas got one Grand Prix point. Robert played against not less than=20 three dan players. Jonas played against two. They were both close to=20 beat Terje, but they failed to win those entering king games. The dan players were the top division of this tournament. None of them=20 lost a game to the kyu players. They played against each other, except=20 for the four point players Terje and Martin, where Sum of opponents=20 score had to decide the third position instead. Martin had an OK=20 tournament with four Grand Prix points, he should have won against=20 Peter, and the game against Carl Johan=B4s anaguma defence was even. It=20 was nice for him to play shogi without an annoying cold. That has not=20 happened since last summer. A better physical condition may improve the=20 results even more. Terje won the third prize and seven Grand Prix points with a=20 combination of defence and attack against Jonas=B4 entering king. Terje=20 always participates in Trollhattan Open, and he uses these experiences=20 to gain success in other tournaments. Nowhere else, he can play agaisnt=20 so strong kyu players. Carl Johan got a good second position in this=20 tournament and eleven Grand Prix points. For instance, he finished the=20 game against Martin with a strong attack, which was necessary, since=20 otherwise he would probably have lost in the counter attack. Noone succeeded to beat Peter in Trollhattan Open 2004. He had his best=20 game against Terje, where we could see some genuine Kaneko shogi on the=20 board with irritating silver generals which created weaknesses in=20 Terje=B4s position. Then we could also see the good old, cocky Kaneko,=20 who was so sure to win this game, that he stood up and delivered quick=20 moves, whereas he sometimes walked restlessly around the venue. Peter=20 got 16 Grand Prix points, and this Mr 100% deserved to win this=20 tournament.
