From: caverchad maverickgrotto org Date: 16 feb 2004 Subject: Hi and Introductions Hi, I'm new to Shogi, and not even a rated chess player. I love the game, but I'm sure I don't play on near the level any of you do, so I hope to learn something reading here. I was introduced to Shogi by a co-worker of mine, Nick Schoonmaker, who I believe is a friend of Larry Kaufman's. I have read the John Fairbairn book and the Trever Leggett book and have been working through some Tsume Shogi problems I've found on the net, but my biggest problem is finding someone to play against. I can play Nick, but he has to give me a 6 piece advantage to make it fun for us both. While being able to handicap that way is one of the great things about Shogi, I'd like to be able to play some even games. I've found Pocket Shogi for my palm, and can beat it on the easiest level, and I've seen the Ishi Press Dos game, but I'm just not willing to part with $50 for a dos based game. I did get the Microsoft Classic games off Ebay for under $10, and it included a version of Shogi, but I noticed a huge bug. It won't promote my rook. It'll promote it's own rook, and any other piece of mine, but not my rook. That's not gonna work. I have played a few games on the shogi club 24 site, but since few of the people I've played speak English and I don't speak Japanese, It's hard to have someone critique my game. Nick sold me an extra set of plastic pieces he had and I made a folding wooden board, so I'm ready to go. Any other English resources I can tap into? I've found this version of chess to be far more exciting then western chess. Why hasn't it caught on more in the west? I see more written in English on Chinese Chess than Shogi.
