Although I am perhaps better known for shogi than for chess (as the top-rated non-Japanese player of shogi), objectively I am probably stronger= at chess than at shogi, though not by a wide margin. Non-Japanese speaking players of shogi are really at an enormous disadvantage, and until recently= players outside Japan could not get regular strong opposition (Internet pla= y has fixed that problem). I am curious what ELO rating a 5 dan compares to. We have an ELO rating system for shogi outside Japan, called the "Pan-Atlantic" rating system. 5 Dan is centered at 2340. My actual Pan-Atlantic shogi rating is 2354, whereas my FIDE rating on the upcoming list should be around 2385. In my opinion, our shogi ratings are a bit more= generous than FIDE chess ratings, so perhaps my true level in chess may be close to a hundred points higher than my true level in shogi, if such a comparison has much meaning. There are also shogi ELO ratings for Internet play and for play at certain clubs in Japan, but as yet there are no ELO ratings published for professional shogi players. I would like to see someone calculate such ratings for the pros, but to date no one has undertaken the project, to my knowledge. If someone were to do this, I thin= k we would be surprised at the size of the gap between the top players (Moriuchi and Habu) and the average Pro. It would surely be several hundred= points, though I don't know the value of "several". About Go I once heard a comparison of amateur versus professional ratings. A professional shodan (1st dan) could give an amateur shodan 7 stones. Is it the same in ShoGi? In shogi a professional 1st dan is about equal to an average amateur 6= Dan. Either can give two piece handicap (rook and bishop) to an amateur 1 D= a n, and be favored to win. The normal handicap between an amateur 5 Dan such= as myself and a mid range pro is bishop, though if I were playing Habu or Moriuchi in a serious game I would really need a rook to have good winning chances.
