I found a piece of paper on the desk dated August 20, 2010 with strange
handwriting with this on it. How odd.

or how to provoke the very capable Japanese into coming up with a hybrid
(both icon and kanji) shogi set:

1) find a wealthy non-Japanese in ill health who does not appear so who
wants to make shogi more accessible to non-kanji readers
 [a 2nd dan recently posted here that he
  sometimes confuses gold and silver generals]

get him to do the following things

2) thank a Japanese opponent for doing him the honor of accepting "Odds
of Kanji" from him explaining what that means if need be

and

3) claim that the Japanese are not up to the task of looking into their
own history for military positions analagous to that of the various
playing pieces in shogi and coming up with representations that not only
look Japanese but are easily recognizable by foreign eyes and that if
they were up to it that they could have an art contest among their
school children or something like that.

Kanji could be included on the pieces as well perhaps placed where a
coat of arms would be if Japanese used such years ago.

This foreigner isn't rich enough or daring (foolish?) enough to try
this. It might work.

I should have specified looking into the relevant country's history for
both Xianqi and ShoGi.
