Adam,

Somewhere I thought I remembered hearing a shogi proverb, "If you have mate= with a pawn drop, you have a legal mate as well." Or something to that eff= ect. Maybe I'm dreaming?

I find when I'm looking at tsumeshogi, hisshi, or over the board in a game,= the I tend to look at NON-promotion options for knights, lances and especi= ally silvers first, before promoting them.

You don't have to promote anything, except pawns and lances that reach
the back rank or knights that reach the last two ranks. Not promoting
silvers, knights and lances is clearly useful from time to time. Not
promoting bishops, rooks and pawns turns up a lot in tsume-shogi but
very very rarely if ever in real life: it's conceivably necessary
becaause of the "can't mate by dropping a pawn" rule.
