It was held somewhere upstairs, in a small room out of most people's way. But as I said before, we could and should have taken better advantage of the MSO. The problem is that everybody likes to play and few people like to man a stand to teach and spread Shogi. Having said that, several people did commit to be available to teach Shogi to interested passers by at subsequent ESCs. I did not attend MSO 2001, so I am not sure if that actually happened.=20 =20 >Western sets may or may not be a useful tool, but there is no point >having a tool if there is no infrastructure there to make use of it. >=20 I think every little bits helps. Merely spreading the "brand name" Shogi may already help. And so may western sets. But if people really want to make a difference, they should contribute to building a sustainable infrastructure. Even people that are already active in organizing Shogi can do better. Those people (including myself) should involve others and share responsibility better. Many players seem to think that events and clubs and associations organize themselves. They don't. Just ask Jochum Drechsler, who is doing a terrific job organizing the 2004 European Championship, how much is involved (don't forget to ask him about his multiple visits to the local authorities so that Russians and Ukrainians may participate). However, my experience is that many people are willing to help if they are asked and if the need for help is made clear. Involving more people reduces the risk that populations dwindle when some organizers stop organizing.
