With me I had my very nice homemade Ranma 1/2 shogi set, with pictures of the characters and symbols indicating the movement of the pieces. While this went over quite nice, all but one prefered to play with the original pieces. What worked well was a small card showing for each piece the kanji, movement arrows, translated name and the corresponding promoted piece. Placed next to the board it made playing much easier for novices.
