I guess the majority of shogi-l subscribers are familiar with=20 Kanji-pieces, since most of us are here by way of www.shogi.net which contains the pages of a good explanation about Kanji-pieces. How about non-shogi-l subscribers? Some of them may have no=20 problem with Kanji-pieces, but I'm quite certain most of them=20 may give up getting started to learn shogi because of Kanji-pieces. I think it would not be a bad idea to have a path to become=20 a shogi player without using Kanji-pieces at the begining. In=20 this sense, I have an eye to www.elephantchess.com which sells=20 Internationalized Xiangqi & Shogi sets, although I have not yet=20 contacted. BTW, apart from font, there are two Kanji-pieces. 2 letter=20 pieces and 1 letter pieces. Economical pieces in plastic=20 material or cheap wood usually 2 letter pieces, while SC24 uses=20 1 letter pieces. I don't know how much this variation can be an=20 obstacle to promote shogi to non-Japanese people, but I=20 personally think that economical pieces could be better to change=20 to 1 letter pieces from 2 letter ones from the point of=20 promoting shogi worldwide.
