And I have some more flimsy ones which came in= the back of the introductory shogi book by Trevor Leggett (they have a nice= mixture of kanji + symbol, but are just printed on a sort of laminated thin= card). Also I have seen some pieces with an animal design (and I thought I once saw Martin post about some international-style pieces in Sweden, but I= may have remembered wrongly). Someone here must know whether George is still selling this sort of set (th= e set I got from him is very nice). His contact details are on the British Shogi Federation page (http://www.hollandnumerics.demon.co.uk/BSF.HTM). Personally I think that shogi could be a lot more popular if some sort of international type of pieces were more freely available (perhaps on sale at= chess congresses). I think that there are a lot of chess players who would really like shogi (for example those who like playing Bughouse) but are put= off by the appearance of the pieces. There are quite a few people who I hav= e taught to play who did not want to play with the kanji-based pieces. But I have been told before by other shogi players (who know much more abou= t the game than me) that people have to learn to play with the right pieces (and that it is not so hard anyway, and if people don't want to try that is= their problem). So who knows ...
