From: Reijer Grimbergen fu is saga-u ac jp> Date: 30 oct 2003 Subject: This week in Shukan Shogi (no. 1017, October 29th 2003) Richard Sams has already sent the comments of the first game of the Ryu-O match between Habu and Moriuchi to Shogi-L (and he did a much better job of it than me, by the way), so in this weeks Shukan Shogi report I will only give the other shogi news of this week: * In the C2 Junisen class, the 5th round was played and the number of undefeated players is now down to four. The biggest surprise was the victory of Hashimoto (with a huge Afro hairdo) against Yamasaki, the top promotion favorite. Other players who lost their perfect record were Yagura (against Takada) and Miyata (against Iijima). The four leaders are now Tamura, Chiba, Anyoji and Yokoyama. Quite a surprising group. Especially rookie Yokoyama seems to have adapted much better to the difference between Shoreikai and Junisen than the other three rookies (who are an abysmal 4-11 combined). It has been a long time since a rookie promoted in his first year in the Junisen, but there are still five rounds to be played, so talk about that is a little premature. * In the Osho league, Tanigawa took the early lead by also winning his second round game. He beat Yonenaga, who had to play two games in week and lost both. The second game he played against Kubo, who is now back to 1-1. It will still take a couple of rounds in this seven player league before it is clear who is playing for challenging Habu and who is playing to avoid relegation. * A good week for Ladies Osho Shimizu. She beat Ishibashi in the second game for the Ladies Open Tournament to win this tournament for the seventh time. She also beat Nakai in the Ladies Oi to take a 2-1 lead in games in this best-of-five match. She now only needs one win from two games to defend her title.
