Subject: OK! Newbie Subscriber!

Alright!

I'm Guy , I am new to shogi, and I live within driving distance of Portland 
OR. I have a set of armies and a board which I bouth while traveling in Japan 
a few years back.

My parents met playing (Western) chess but growing up I was always a tactical 
disaster.  I run Linux, and I just got a teeny graphical window verision 
running. It is consistently whipping me - so I wuld like to learn what I can 
do to at least hold my own, or at least get to know some folks who can 
explain what's going on so I can learn better. So:

1) Any players or regular meeings of shogi players in Portland?

2) Can anyone recommend a website that explains certain basics, such as  
'What's a Climbing Silver attack?'
