From: Richard Sams parkcity ne jp> Date: 23 oct 2003 Subject: Ryuo Game 1 - Players' Comments The report on Game 1 of the Ryuo title match in this morning's Yomiuri Shimbun included post-game comments by the two players. Habu said: "My reply (57) S-6f to the sealed move (56) P*5f was dubious. And with (99) P*9b I threw it away." The pawn drop on 9b looked strong, but it gave White's king time to start its run to the other side of the board. Moriuchi's reply 99 ... K-7c, rather than the normal Lx9b, took Habu by surprise. Moriuchi said: "I thought I was losing and was really surprised when I found myself with a winning position. I intend to play from the next game onwards as if it were a new match." A typically modest comment from Moriuchi, but he was surely pleased with both the content and result of this game. Having lost his last five games in a row to Habu (including the four games of the Meijin match), he has stopped the rot. In his pre-match interview (posted on October 16), he mentioned that he had both losing streaks and winning streaks "against certain opponents." Could this be the beginning of another winning streak? It will be interesting to see more detailed comments on this game in next week's Shukan Shogi.
