From: DANERUD MARTIN comhem se> Date: 4 nov 2003 Subject: Ryuo match, game 2, second report Dear shogi friends, Dotted around lake Biwako are several small castle towns, like Nagahama and Hikone. Yesterday during my sight-seeing day it was raining, and today, the first day of the Ryuo match, game 2, it was sunshine and some wind from the lake. Anyway, of course the fans joined at Hotel Hamakogetsu to follow the game. The players are situated at the second floor, and the comment room, which is also the TV studio for analyses is at the first floor. As a matter of fact, the arrangements are not so professional as one may have thought. Only a few of the spectators can follow the two TV screens showing the board from above and the players from the side as well as the analysis board. I think that is worth pointing out, since we were all customers, paying 1500 yen for the entrance. Anyway, I had a good position myself. Around 30 spectators followed the event. Moriuchi started the game quickly and with confidence. Habu took quite some time even for the obvious moves. It was a Yokofudori game, and it seemed that it was like a dance where Moriuchi was leading and Habu followed somewhat more hesitantly. Habu seemed to have a slight cold, and it took him some time to wake up for the game. There was quite a difference between the players, as Moriuchi behaved very strictly, whereas Habu made all possible sounds with his fan, changed position, jumped up and down, and seemed less comfortable. There were also several small accidents, for instance the tea maid dropping her tray with a crash sound and the organisers spending a lot of time and talk before they could shelter the sunshine bothering the players. Back to the action. You can play through the moves for yourselves from the link give by Manabu Terao. The players finished after day 1 having produced only 39 moves together. Habu spent a very long time for the last move in order to have the right to seal the game at 6 p.m. And the position is interesting. Sealing gives Habu some advantage since there are several possible moves for him. The variation 20. - Bx3e 21. R3f P*3d seems to give a position, where the bishop is not working so strongly. Other alternatives are 20. - S2c and even 20. -P5f was discussed by the commentators. There is a very interesting continuation to look forward to tomorrow! I recommend you all to follow the game.
