As in the previous years we enjoyed the great atmosphere of the castle Schwaneck. Half of all participants slept in this youth hostle. Unfortunately many players that intended to come had to cancel because of illness, business matters or other reasons. Nevertheless with 32 participants the same number of participants as last year attended due to many new players that joined us. On Friday we started with a blitz tournament (8 minutes) 6 rounds Olufsens pairing that was also used in Milan and Paris. The quickplay always gives a different picture than the regular elo-rating would suggest because the elo-rating does not correspond to quickplay strength. Marco Dietmayer was the winner with 5 points out of six and a tournament rating of 1839, more than 100 points above the next player. This time I decided to use a strict MacMahon system as it is used in Go. This is the first time it is used in Germany (and in any shogi tournament?). There was a top group of eight players with the same MacMahon score. After that players got one MacMahon point less for each grade bracket. I did not consider the actal honorary grade but the grade bracket the players elo corresponds to. This system produced pairings without great differences in playing strength so that the games were always close and ineresting for the players. That was always the main focus in German shogi tournaments. The first round already saw a big surprise as the best four players all lost their game. The tournament promised to be close and exciting. After four rounds four players had the same number of points (Wartlick, Staberhofer, Drechsler, Dietmayer). Karl Wartlick won against Rainer Staberhofer and Marco Dietmayer against Jochen Drechsler. So that Karl Wartlick and Marco Dietmayer now shared the top and had to play for first place in the last round against each other. Karl Wartlick won that game and secured first place as the only player with 5 wins from the top group. Following him were four players with the same MacMahon score. That shows how close the top group was. Rainer Staberhofer came on second place with a better SOS (sum of oponents score) than the others. Lucky to be on third place was Jochen Drechsler with the same SOS as Marco Dietmayer but a slightly better SOSOS (sum of opponents SOS). Prizes were given to the first three players. Wolfgang Erben got the prize for the best player from 3 Kyu to 7 Kyu with 5 wins. The prize for the best player from 8 Kyu and less went to Peter Hingley with 5 wins only ahead of Daniel Többens with one SOS less. We also awarded a prize for the best newcomer. That are players without any prior elo-rating. Five players competed in this category in their first shogi tournament. Tobias Marczewski was the best newcomer with four wins. Pl. Name Str Cl.
