Dear shogi enthusiasts,

This Saturday the tournament "Summer = Shogi" was=20 played outside at the restaurant Villa Belparc located in the beautiful = park=20 Slottsskogen in Goteborg. Until Saturday, the weather in Sweden had been = very=20 dry and hot so far this summer. So dry and hot that in = many=20 places it has been forbidden to light a fire and to = sprinkle your=20 lawn. Somewhat unfortunately, this dry and hot weather came to an end=20 this Saturday, replaced by cool air and a continuous=20 downpure.

Despite the wheater not less than = 10 brave=20 shogi players turned up to play 4 games of = shogi.
Interesting starts were made by Jonas = Ahlqvist who=20 has shown to be in great form lately in the Swedish Championships for=20 teams and Martin Danerud who has developed a lot during his recent = trips to=20 Japan.

There were no surprises in the first = two rounds of=20 the tournament when all players rated in the upper half managed to win = their=20 games. In the third round there were some slight=20 surprises. Jonas convincingly won against me thereby sharing = the lead=20 with Martin Danerud who so far had made a very solid = impression during=20 his games. Tor Gammelg=E5rd won against Anders Vidal and thereby secured = the=20 rating price for players between 6-10 kyu. Winning this game also gave = Tor a=20 shot at the bronze and perhaps also the silver medal if = winning his=20 last round. Another slight surprise was Daniel Wredenberg win against = Mikael=20 Jansson. By that Daniel secured the medal for best player between = 11-15=20 kyu.

In the last round the two players = with perfect=20 score, Martin Danerud and Jonas Ahlqvist, faced each other in a direct = final.=20 This turned out to be a very one-sided game. Jonas misplayed the=20 opening and he was not given any chance to recover after that. = Martin,=20 who seemed to be the strongest player during the tournament, = thereby won=20 the gold medal with a perfect score.

Tor Gammelg=E5rd and I played each = other in the=20 last round. The pot consisted of the bronze medal or even = a=20 slight chance to win the silver medal. In a very tough game Tor = chased my=20 king into the middle of the board but failed to deliver mate. Instead I = managed=20 to turn the tables thereby vinning the bronze.

Goteborgs Shogi Society would like to = thank all=20 participants for their interest and welcome all of you to the next years = competition.

Regards
