Subject: Ken Whyld has died

The British Chess Magazine and several chess websites are reporting
that Ken Whyld died yesterday, July 11, 2003, at age 77.

Ken Whyld is best known as a writer and chess historian. Ken's
landmark work was The Oxford Companion to Chess, which he co-authored
with David Hooper in 1992 and 1996.

I never met him but I remember him best because he ridiculed my theory
that Chess was invented in China rather than India in an article he
wrote in British Chess Magazine in 1986.

My article, which he slammed, is now on my website at

I think he eventually came to accept my theory as valid, however.
