As for the charging of fees to view the match on-line, it was probably inevitable. Most "free" services such as on-line newspapers and magazines are moving to a paid-subscription-type of Internet service. After, the games are not on "free TV", so while we may not like it, I don't think it was a blunder at all by Mainichi. It is actually quite a logical move on their part. In fact, we may find out that if they end up getting a lot of subscribers or at least enough to break even then most of the other sponsors of the big tournaments will follow suit, and do something similiar.
