From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 10 apr 2003 Subject: Re: 4th International Austrian Shogi Championship Dear Bill, Of course the word "play-off" can have sligthly different meanings. In the Junisen A for instance, there is a play-off for the first place and the challenger position for the Meijin title only in the case when the top players have the same number of points. That was previosly also the case for the European Championship, before we started to use a 32 players knock-out, that there was a play-off for the title, only when the top players had the same number of points. This is the meaning of the word "play-off" that you are referring to. In the case of the Austrian Championship, they have an international championship, and then, based on that, a play-off to decide the national championship title. Apparently, when you look at the championship last year, the principle is that the four Austrian top players play best-of-three games semifinals based on the top player from the Austrian International Championship playing the fourth best Austrian and so on. Then, the winners of the semifinals play a best-of-three games final. In the case of the Swedish Championship, we have a Swedish Championship tournament. The top two players (using points, SOS, SDOS, and progressive) are then qualified to the best-of-three games Challenger final, regardless of them having the same number of points or different number of points. That is always the case (top two). Then, then winner of the Challenger final will play the Championship final and best-of-five games title match against the ruling champion from the play-off last year. A similar interpretation does also exist in the world of physical sports. Now, for instance, the NHL play-off will start. There, sixteen clubs will compete for the Stanley Cup trophee, even if they scored the same or different amounts of points during the season.
