One famous example is of course the former world champion Karpov (1975-1985), who was a candidate for the
State Duma seat of his native Russian town Tula in 1997. Out of ten candidates, Karpov was number three (16 %)
after the former presidential bodyguard Korzhakov (26 %) and Pashchenko (17 %). 43 % of the electorate
participated in the election.
