I don't know whether it's common or not. But, former athletes and
entertainers do run for political office here. There are former sumo
wrestlers, pro wrestlers, Olympic athletes, baseball players etc,etc that
have been or are still members of the Japanese Diet. A few years ago, the
Governors of both of Japan's largest cities (Tokyo and Osaka) were both
former TV comedians. However, I am unaware of any former Shogi Pros that
have entered politics.
