It's almost exactly like PGN... but there was no specification made as far as I'm aware. I would suggest that "PDN" (Portable Draughts Notation) be used. It's really a generic format that is rooted in PGN (whoever wrote PGN apparently thought that chess was the only game :) ). It has a tag to indicate which game is being played. Shogi used to be games number 3, but I can't find that spec. Here is a brief explanation: http://www.chessandcheckers.com/pdn.htm I would prefer that if there is not a standard in use, that we tag along on one of the XML formats (XMLPGN, ChessML, etc.) -JEEP -----Original Message----- From: The Shogi Discussion List [mailto:SHOGI-L TECHUNIX TECHNION AC IL]On Behalf Of Sam Sloan Sent: Sunday, September 29, 2002 11:31 AM To: SHOGI-L TECHUNIX TECHNION AC IL Subject: Is there a PGN Equivalent for Shogi?? Is there a PGN Equivalent for Shogi?? For chess, a "Programmable Game Notation" has been developed. The way this works is that any chess game rendered in PGN notation can be replayed on almost every chess computer program. All you have to do is copy and paste a game in PGN into any chess database program such as in ChessBase for example, and the game will play over itself. http://www.chessbase.com It would be very useful for Shogi to have this, because then when a game is posted here, I could just copy, and paste it and play it over. In shogi, because the board is bigger and the notation is harder to follow, this would be even more useful than it is in chess. I know that I would study shogi a lot more and take an interest in improving my game if PGN were available for shogi. I am sure than many more Europeans and Americans would take up and study shogi if this were available. Going further, I would say that there is nothing that would do more to popularize shogi than this. Sam Sloan Here is a sample chess game in PGN Notation. It is the most famous game played by a famous chess grandmaster who just died.
