From: "'Gary Whelan'" ENTERMAIL NET> Date: 14 oct 2002 Subject: Re: How to play shogi on the web? The reason the U.S. Yahoo site is desolate is because it hasn't been set up yet on their main portal or whatever it's called (Shogi is not listed under "Board and Tile Games"). I just wrote them and rattled their cage about it. While I think Tokyo Dojo (http://www.shogidojo.com/eng/engindex.htm) is THE place for english-speaking shogi players to play on the net, it would nice if the Yahoo site were activated (not that I have much free time for either). Thousands of westerners play chess there and they might get interested in shogi if it were active. It might give the rest of us a chance to "talk up" the game with the curious. hello everyone, Back in Feb., Christophe Weimann started this thread by asking of places on the internet where he could play a game with others. Reg Tanaban mentioned about Yahoo in Japan within their games portal having a place to play. I visited this over the weekend and there was absolutely hundreds of shogi players there. I had a hard time registering, but with the help of the alta-vista Babel fish page, I managed to work out what was being requested and managed to register. At the Shogi board applet it was very hard to identify the controls. Reg is quite right, the board and the pieces are fine. Even though I had downloaded the Japanese support for IE, this didn't apply to the characters on the applet so the Japanese characters on the buttons and in the chat & move panels appears as thick black strokes. I was lucky to chat to some folks there who knew English and was able to start a game. I lost because I timed out - I couldn't read that part of the applet. Apparently they were playing with 10 mins per move max, and considering I have never played against "real person" before, my new friends were impressed I got as far as I did. ( I have never seen a Japanese keyboard, but it must be possible to switch between Japanese and Roman characters) Anyhow, to cut to the chase, not many of you appear to know, but the Yahoo site in the States, also has the very same shogi applet, but with English text on the buttons. (see the jpg attached) The problem is that no-one apparently goes there (its desolate) and unfortunately, you cannot play against a robot so without an opponent its... well useless. Which is a pity really as I can see how useful this applet would be for someone who wants to learn (like me). Not only can you chat with your opponent, but you can have spectators, mentors (and tormentors) who can contribute to the chat. There is also an league/ladder system and players have the option of grading their matches, but of course, this is currently empty. I'm wondering whether or not any of you would be interested in getting together to meet up at suitable times (mid- Atlantic and/or mid-Pacific perhaps??). I would enjoy being able to lose against some of the best amongst you. Seriously though, the opportunities to learn and discuss in real time would be invaluable, and I feel sure I am not alone in this. Oh, I guess you'll want to visit the site and see for yourselves, well this link should get you to the Shogi Lounge and from there to the playing tables, (if not; a game search on "shogi" from http://games.yahoo.com should achieve the same). Please note that if you have never registered with Yahoo (US) before, you will be shunted sideways first to complete a register. Its free and inconvenient and is similar to the Microsoft Passport register process. Follow it through carefully as there may be extras that you may not want to subscribe to and you will have to de- select these. >>> http://games.yahoo.com/games/login2?page=shg Also once you are registered, you can go and play other games: chess, backgammon, solitaire games, word games, bingo, Go, etc. But why would you want to? :) Ian -----Original Message----- From: Reg Tanaban [mailto:reg418 HOTMAIL COM] Sent: 22 February 2002 21:19 To: SHOGI-L TECHUNIX TECHNION AC IL Subject: Re: How to play shogi on the web? You can try http://games.yahoo.co.jp/ and go to the shogi link there -- the Yahoo Japan account is distinct from the other Yahoo accounts so you may need to register. The Java applet you play shogi on does not allow you to read the Japanese words (on Windows 2000), so at first guessing which button starts the game and so on is a little confusing, but the shogi pieces are viewable images, so that's not a problem. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christophe WEIMANN" AOL COM> To: TECHUNIX TECHNION AC IL> Sent: Friday, February 22, 2002 11:58 AM Subject: How to play shogi on the web? > Does it exist a web site where we can play shogi against human players? > If so, could you please give me the references of this site? > > Thanks in advance. > > Christophe >
