If I have to numbers, I have to consider their order also. If I have letters and numbers, it does not matter if I mix them up (P7f or Pf7 would both be clearly identifyable). I have rows and columns better seperated in my mind then. I think that this system is closer to the Japanese idea. They use different symbols for rows and columns as well. Maybe for the western world using arabic and roman numerals would be a closer equivalent. Jochen Drechsler.
