Until I read your post, I always assumed it was just a chess problem. This always happens when my opponent's position becomes critical. I don't know the trick either, but I was under the impression that somehow they can press the "pause" key or enter a pause mode and stop their clock until they press the pause key again. I thought ICC had a pause mode like this when you are playing a computer, but obviously people have figured out how to do it when playing another person. On ICC, I've also played an opponent that must have been a computer that took just a few seconds for the entire game while making strong moves. Anything is possible with online clocks. I haven't played much on Club 24 yet so it hasn't happened to me there. Since your Shogi Club 24 opponents have accounts (I assume), I would complain to the administrator, so he'll cancel their account.
