From: Brian Wald INTERLOG COM> Date: 22 jan 2002 Subject: Canadian Shogi Federation Hello: On November 29, 2001, I asked Shogi-L members about shogi players in the Toronto area. Fortunately, I received some replies; however, I did not receive many responses from Toronto residents. Two players, both from the USA, explained to me that they have spoken to Toronto shogi players and have heard of informal shogi gatherings in Toronto. I made the effort to call the Japanese Consulate (Toronto office), the Japanese Cultural Centre of Toronto, and the Japan Foundation for information about shogi. Unfortunately, employees of these three institutions could not help me (incidentally, I phoned each place twice), although one of them said a Go club existed a few years ago but is no longer meeting. If anybody knows of any shogi players in Toronto, or elsewhere in Canada for that matter, please let me know, as I wish to form a Toronto Shogi Club once I have enough members. In the meantime, Tanase Yasushi (of Edmonton) and I have designed a very simple website to promote shogi in Canada and facilitate the creation of shogi clubs here: http://www.platz.jp/~tanase/csf/csf.html (All programming credit thus far goes to Tanase -- if you wish to learn more about him, please see the Computer Shogi Association website.) Of course, our website is simple for now and we wish to add to it in the future. Any and all suggestions are most welcome; also, hopefully shogi institutions and clubs around the world will be willing to make the Canadian Shogi Federation a link from their pages... with luck, maybe more potential Canadian shogi players will contact us this way. Finally, we wish to officially register the CSF as a shogi federation. What is the easiest way to accomplish this goal? Thanks in advance for any responses. Sincerely, Brian Wald
