From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 26 feb 2002 Subject: Results of the Swedish Shogi Championship tournament 2002 Dear shogi friends, During the weekend, February 23 and 24, the Swedish Championship tournament was played in Stockholm. The tournament had six rounds and the time per player was 45 minutes + 40 seconds byo-yomi. The tournament pairing was done with the Swiss Perfect program based on ELO numbers. The best kyu player and the best dan player in the tournament will get the tickets to the 2nd International Shogi Forum in Tokyo in October. The last ticket is for the Swedish Champion, who will be the winner of the Swedish Championship play-off in Linkoping, May 9-12. The two top players in the Swedish Championship tournament are qualified for the Challenger final of the play-off. The number of wins was a sufficient basis to conclude that Nils Carlsson, Stockholm, and Peter Kaneko, Linkoping, are qualified for the Swedish Championship play-off, and that they get one ticket for Japan each. They scored five points each, and they were followed by five players with four points each. The general game quality of the Swedish players increases every year. Most players keep good shape at least for the first twenty moves (40 ply) of the games. Only one game was won after an illegal move. Eighteen players started the tournament and seventeen players played all rounds. That was below what we had both hoped and expected. It does not seem that the Swedish shogi players care so much about prizes. The number of participants in the four Swedish Championship tournaments has been almost constant. Probably it can only be increased by gaining more members (and so we will). It is also totally clear to me now that shogi is a tremendously tough game. Two hopeful players sit down to play a game, and after the game one winner can stand up, while there is always a loser. There is no consolation and no peaceful solution. There are no draws. Probably those who choose to participate in a Shogi Championship tournament are attracted by this deciding nature of the game. Those who choose not to play (and do not have a good reason for it) are those who feel that they cannot cope with this fact (whatever they say). From a human, psychological perspective their amusing explanations for not participating in a tournament of this fantastic game, which they like and spend several hours on, are then quite easy to understand as purely escaping reactions. Of course, still they have to be respected. Year Championship city Number of participants 1999 Goteborg 18 2000 Stockholm 19 2001 Goteborg 16 2002 Stockholm 18 2003 Goteborg ?? Several different prizes were awarded this year: Swedish Junior (under 20) Champion: Daniel Ivarsson Best player with a grade between 15-kyu and 6-kyu: Tor Gammelgard Best shogi beginner (without previously rated games): Daniel Wredenberg Robert Soderberg also received a tsume book for winning the tsume prize competition in the last issue of SHOGI IN SWEDISH. Jan Palmgren won Aono's book "Better Moves for Better Shogi" which was awarded the winner of a lottery where everyone who was present at the prize giving ceremony participated automatically. All participants (starting from the bottom) could also choose a prize from a prize board, mainly consisting of shogi books.
