The number of participants was magnificent. We could more than double the number compared to last year. 32 keen shogi players took part in the tournament. The players were from the Netherlands, England, Austria, Japan and Germany of course. More than 10 players attended their first or second shogi tournament ever. We played in the castle Schwaneck that is situated at the riverside of the Isar. The chambers provided a very cosy atmosphere. In the breaks between the games we went on the terrace for fresh air and could enjoy the beautiful view of the Alps in the far south. On sunday some players took the chance to play on the terrace under the sun. It was very handy that everything was in one place: We slept, ate and played under the same roof... The shogi activities started with simultanies handicap games against the pros. We were trying to show our best shogi. The handicaps of many newcomers were surely to small. We did not expect that they were playing so well allready. In the end Mr. Miyata and Mr. Tamura won only about 40% of their games. The tournament on saturday had an important change: Instead of standing at the side and getting bored the professionals wanted to play with us in the tournament and teach us. We knew that that would influence the drawings but it would much benefit our shogi. Gerd Schnider won the tournament with a perfect score (apart from the game against Mr. Tamura). The best player of the second group (3 Kyu - 9 Kyu) was Dave Faldon. Best player of the last group was Günther Mensching. Thank you to all the people that help during the tournament especially Yuji who translated between the pros and us and Marc (Marian) who helped in different ways and took the photos (have a look at: www.shogi.de). I hope everybody enjoyed the tournament. All the best, Jochen Drechsler. Pl. Name Str Cl.
